Rare Bangholm Keramik set of candle holders (Denmark, 1960s)

Rare to find set of 2 ceramic Bangholm candle holders, produced in Denmark in the 1960s, with a lovely trademark colour stripe pattern. Bangholm Keramik started operation in 1948 in the suburb of Aarhus, Skodstrup, under the tutelage of ceramicists Knud Nielsen and his father.

Now, if you have some knowledge on Danish history, you’ll know that 1948 was a tough year, peaking with the ‘Easter Crisis’ - the fear that the Soviet Union or other Soviet aligned Communists were planning an invasion of Denmark and a coup d`état, just in the wake of the 1948 Communist Coup in Czechoslovakia. If after WWII the country started the reconstruction efforts and re-ignition of the industry, remaining neutral between the East and West, the Communist threat was growing and after an attempt to form a Scandinavian defence union, Denmark eventually joined NATO in 1949.

So, in the midst of internal turmoil, Bangholm Keramik rose to popularity producing high quality domestic and utilitarian homeware items, reaching a height in popularity in the 1950s and 1960s, being known for their colourful striped glazed terracotta pottery, creating unique ceramic pieces, a mix of mid-century meets Pop Art, with a touch of Nordic style.

The candle holders are some of the rare pieces to be found nowadays on the secondary market, they are in excellent condition, featuring the Bangholm trademark stripe pattern and they would be a lovely addition to your coffee or dinner table, adding a splash of colour whilst exhibiting some unique-rare-to-find Danish pottery.
