Although produced during early 1950s, this porcelain trio set is quintessentially Art Deco, from the use of that colloidal gold to the very sun rays pattern and the black rim.
Now, let me tell you a story about Art Deco. This movement is a lot of things, but perhaps its central feature is light and this plays a key role. It emerged in the period between the two world wars and it came about as a celebration of newness and speed, of forward looking progress supported by the emerging machinery, technology and the burning desire flickering within the society to leave behind the war trauma.
In Art Deco, light serves a special place, showcasing the impatience of speed through shapes and symbolic references, using light as part of this new exploration. The designs are adorned and sometimes filled with shiny materials that could reflect on surfaces, and so the shapes and forms were specifically designed so as to reflect and intensify ambient light and in extenso, return it to the viewers eyes.
But perhaps most importantly, the way light appears in Art Deco is more than anything, a symbol. Springing from the optimism of the age that found a powerful symbol in the rising sun and the rays bursting through the storm clouds - reference to the WWI period -, Art Deco artists heavily used the sun, the rays of light or lightning bolts in their oeuvres/compositions.
And so, besides bringing some of that 1920s elegance into your house, this trio porcelain set can also be an amazing artefact of a memorable time frame in history.
