Mid-century gravy/sauce bowl with attached underplate produced by Thomas (Rosenthal) in West Germany, during the 1960s - this piece is actually one of their early products from when they’ve changed their mark, back in 1959.

As Thomas was effectively part of the Rosenthal Group since 1908, the form and design of this piece is attributed to industrial designer Raymond Loewy heading ‘Raymond Loewy Associates’, a leading internal design studio headquartered in New York. He is known for establishing industrial design as a profession in the 1930s, after WWI he immigrated to the US and worked as a fashion illustrator for Vogue and a window display designer  and is most known for designing the Lucky Strike packages and the Coca Cola bottle.

With a design very much in the vein of the 1960s, when besides the popping leopard print, checkerboard, psychedelic, warped and floral patterns were all the hype, this piece is somehow in a limbo between the roaring 1960s and the relatively mildly patterns from the 1950s, and so we have a delicate leaf motif, with some Op Art influences (the leafs have a lovely outline, coloured outside the lines, creating a visual effect).

This would be a great addition to your family meals, bringing that touch of old yet with a modern feel, ideal for gravy or any other shareable sauces, but can also be used for serving salads, hummus, fruit jams or even nuts.
