Porcelain trio Retsch & Co. Wunsiedel (Bavaria) produced in Germany during 1920-1930, with a scalloped rim, colloidal gold details and Art Deco inspired embossed pattern. All pieces are decorated with a Japanese cherry themed pattern, in mint condition.

To give some context for the contrast between the scalloped almost romantic rim, the gold insertions, the embossed details, with a clear European inspiration and the Japanese flower motif, it is important to know that Art Deco’s one of the most salient features was eclecticism, referencing ancient and/or exotic cultures (back then, “exotic” was shorthand for non-European).

So, back in 1872, the French Philippe Burty coined the term “Japonisme”, which quickly became one of France's most enduring aesthetic movement at the time and for more than 40 years it inspired designers in various spheres of art: tea sets by Hermès, silver and cloisonné centrepieces by Boucheron, embellishments for the trunks created by Louis Vuitton, brooches by Lucien Gaillard, glass by René Lalique or wallpaper by Èmile Jacques Ruhlmann.

This morphed into two aesthetics movements during late 19th century-early 20th century: Art Nouveau and Art Deco, oftentimes thought to have been entirely created by the West’s influence, but in reality this would have been impossible without the previous exposure to the Japanese art and design.

This set can be a lovely addition to your coffee or tea routine, with a touch of history and the eclecticism of styles that can be a great fit into any home.
