Porcelain trio Schwarzenbach Bavaria produced between 1935-1945, with a rose pattern on all pieces, colloidal gold rim and an eccentric yellow colour splash.

One of the reasons why this trio is rather eccentric looking is because the design (pattern and colours) is not that widespread for that period, mostly seeing white porcelain with colloidal gold and colourful flower patterns.

After the lavish Art Deco period, with intricate designs and a lot of rich reds, vibrant greens, daring blues, the Great Depression (1929) and the rise of Bauhaus movement, brought about a greater use of the signature primary colours, including yellow and variations of yellow (mustard yellow, ochre and even gold).

If anything, the 1930s witnessed a tightening of wallets and that translated also into a change from deep dark colours to pastels and creamy yellows throughout the home to lighten up emotions and the harsh reality of the period.

And if interior design or the fashion took up this colour trend, in our research we have found that the automotive industry also followed suit. The yellow featured on the Schwarzenbach set resembles a lot one of the 1931 "Yellow Violet” colour code, used by the American car producer Chrysler.

On a bittersweet note, the set features a mix of blooming roses and some buds waiting to bloom, whilst having some very detailed thorn details, they seem like a metaphor of the time for the period, waiting for better days.

This set can be a lovely addition to your coffee or tea ritual, with a touch of the olden days evoking  while still looking quite contemporary.
