More than being just a round lidded porcelain box, this piece has some symbolism behind it, as it used to be given out on special occasions such as the First Communion or Confirmation, but also at weddings or baptisms. The bonbonnière usually consists of five Jordan almonds in a festive bag, with five almonds symbolising health, wealth, happiness, fertility and long life.
To give you some context, the First Communion is a ceremony in some Christian traditions during which a person first receives the Eucharist. This practice is common in many parts of the Latin tradition of the Catholic, Lutheran or Anglican Church and often acts as a rite of passage, celebrated between the ages of seven and thirteen.
In other denominations, the First Communion follows the reception of Confirmation (which occurs at some point in adolescence or adulthood), while Easter Orthodox and Oriental Orthodox Christians first receive the sacrament of the Holy Communion in infancy, along with the Holy Baptism and Chrismation.
The Confirmation, in denominations that practice infant baptism is seen as the sealing of the covenant created in baptism. Catholicism views confirmation as a sacrament, called Christmation in the Eastern Christian - usually conferred after baptism.
With Catholicism being at the heart of France, this Limoges porcelain box is a staple piece for Limoges, synonymous with classic luxury, and a family heirloom to pass onto the next generations. It was produced during early 1960s, with exquisite hand painted colloidal gold details, designed and crafted by master artisans in the heart of the city of Limoges, according to techniques developed back in the 17th century.
So, regardless whether you are going to use it for its intended purpose, or use it to store jewellery, store sugar for your coffee or chocolate candies, or simply use it as a decoration, this is definitely an unique piece to have in your home.
