Produced by Thomas (division of the Rosenthal Group) until 1974, this set of 4 could have come out of the factory doors in West Germany anytime until then.
With a plain bowl and a pressed stem, these pieces are part of the very whimsical Bacchus Collection, inspired [obviously] from Bacchus, the God of Wine. His figure was usually associated with the grapevine and ivy, and later on, around 500 BC, with the tyrsus, a wand wreathed in ivy and vine leaves, with a pine cone at the top.
Now, if you`re also wondering what’s the connection between an Ancient God and Germany, well, it has everything to do! There’s this town in Germany, first attested in documents sometime during early 11th century called Bacharach [meaning ‘altar to Bacchus], infamous for its wine [how convenient!]. Dating from the Celtic and Roman times, there’s even this wine festival held every first weekend of October, just before the grape harvest, with the purpose of emptying the barrels and make room for the new wine. With each festival, the town of Bacharach installs a temporary party mayor, given the title of Bacchus.
With a really cool design taking on a mid-century vibe but with a somehow antique inspired goblet feel, these glasses are a great addition to any dinner table, looking great with both super modern or vintage dinnerware pieces.
