Porcelain tureen produced by Seltmann Weiden in Bavaria, sometime between 1949 and 1954, covering also the time when the Allies occupied Germany after the end of WWII (1945-1952). To give some context, after Germany was defeated the US, Great Britain, USSR and France jointly occupied the country agreeing to share responsibility for administering Germany and its capital eventually evolving into the division between the Western and Easter sector.
Just like most non-war related industries, Seltmann was also affected by war, and the facilities in Erbendorf and Krummennaab served as quarters for American troops and most parts of the factories were either destroyed or rendered useless during this period as the soldiers adapted the buildings to the need of housing large amounts of people and material. The company recovered after many efforts and the support of workers, and by 1953 Seltmann was already starting to modernise production.
This piece is particularly interesting as it takes on a colour palette very much in tune with the upcoming trends of the 1950s and the almost deconstructed/abstract leaf pattern gives that modern mid-century touch while still reminiscing the elegance of the 1940s, featuring a colloidal gold motif on the rim of the lid and the handles (kindly check the pictures as the gold has slightly faded on some parts due to use and age).
Almost like a breath of fresh air and a ray of light after the previous decade, this piece really sums the brave new world that they were stepping in. So, besides being produced during the US occupation and in a time of reconstruction and scarce materials inasmuch as demand, and at a crossroad for Seltmann itself, this tureen is also a great piece to add to your dinner table, whether you use it for serving soup, vegetables, pasta, meats or any other side dishes to share with your friends and family.
