Villeroy & Boch Wildlife Crystal glasses (Germany, 1980s)

Set of 3 crystal glasses limitedly produced by Villeroy & Boch during early 1980s (starting 1983) and discontinued in the 1990s. They feature a 6 sided cut stem and etched wildlife/game scenes (deer, wild boar, hare, rabbits and other game animals) and are rare Connaisseur pieces.

The design is actually part of the newly restructured company (1982) when Villeroy & Boch was divided into three divisions (tiles, sanitary ware and table/crystal ware), and started readjusting both the designs and their marketing strategy so as to respond to the market needs and the changing nature of their customers. This is actually something that many homeware companies went through during the 1980s, when the world faced one of the most severe recession since WWII.

During that time many industries were affected by the early recession (1980-1983), triggered by the 1979 energy crisis caused by the Iranian Revolution, that disrupted the global oil supply, pushing the inflation rates in the US, Canada, West Germany, Italy, Japan and the UK. During that time frame, countries experience stagflation characterised by high unemployment and inflation rates, with echoes until the 1990s.

So, one of the great things about these glasses is that despite the economic hardship that both the world and Villeroy & Boch were going through, they are of pristine quality with intricate details, sold at the time at very high prices, value that was maintained to-day.

They are great for water or cordial wine and they could really bring that cabin life vibe to your dinner table. Either you’ll use them for a cosy dinner of 2 and keep a spare one or you’re a family of three and want to make your child feel like they’re also dining with the adults, these would be a lovely addition to your kitchen cabinet.
