Set of 4 collectible porcelain plates designed and produced by Schönwald in 1976 for Lufthansa, with a hand-painted dark cobalt blue air flow-like pattern. The plates are grey with a hint of blue and have a speckled look. These pieces are very rare nowadays, as these were not sold to the general public.

Since 1914, when the first commercial flights began in the USA, airline companies started to refine the services offered on board and amongst these was offering passengers a restaurant like experience.

Imagine this: its 1976, you’re on a Lufthansa operated flight, just reached cruising speed and cabin crew is serving food on china plates, handing in knives and forks, prepared by the in-flight chef. Besides that, tea was always served from porcelain cups, all beverages served from crystal glasses and you even had a sommelier helping you choose the best wine for your dish - most dishes used to feature stakes, prawns and smoked salmon - and you did not even need to fly first class.

If up until then Lufthansa worked with Selb Bavaria, V&B and Rosenthal, during late 1970s the collaboration with Schönwald started and as design entered a new era, more colour and pattern infused and less minimalistic as compared to the amazing 1963 serving sets designed by Hans Theo Baumann (Rosenthal Studio Line).

The colour varies from plate to plate as these have been manually glazed and might present some minor cutlery scuffing, but otherwise in excellent condition relative to their use and age.
