This warm beige ceramic confit pot with retracted neck and beaded edge was produced by Merkelbach & Wick in Grenzhausen (Germany) is by far one of the rarest pieces we have found and even though it looks like it was made yesterday, it was actually made sometime between 1880 - 1920.
The company, Merkelbach & Wick was founded back in 1880 in Grenzhausen, now Höhr-Grenzhausen, the centre of ceramic industry, located somewhere close to the city of Koblenz, just 80 km from Bonn - just in case you’d be having a road trip through Germany. They mainly produced beer steins and ewers, which makes this confit pot even more special.
Initially this pot came with a glass lid a rubber sealing ring, but more than a century has passed and those parts where not actually attached to the pot and by all means it belongs to a museum - the Germanisches National Museum (Nuremberg) has one exact piece, extremely rare to find in this specific size. Founded in 1852, it houses a large collection of items relating to German culture and art extending from prehistoric times through to the present day. The museum is Germany's largest museum of cultural history and out of its total holding of some 1.3 million objects approximately 25,000 are exhibited.
This would be a great antique piece to add to your home and regardless whether you are going to use it or just nicely display it on one of your counter, it’s definitely something truly unique.
