Super rare set of 4 mid-century Arita Yaki porcelain footed cups produced in Japan during 1950s. Now, I must admit that these pieces were actually quite a hard find as vintage Arita porcelain is rare in Europe, but what we did manage to find should suffice.

So, with a history dating back to 1616, when a naturalised Korean potter, Yi Sam-pyeong discovered a source of kaolin underneath the Izumiyama mountain in Arita, and began firing the nation’s first porcelain. This became known as Arita porcelain, or Arita-yaki.

Between the second half of the 17th century and the first half of the 18th century they were extensively exported to Europe, travelling initially from Arita's port of Imari, Saga to the Dutch East India Company’s outpost at Nagasaki. The following centuries also saw an aflux of Arita pieces into Europe, especially at the end of 1880s, beginning of the 1900s when Asian designs were super popular.

Solid and durable, Arita porcelain became known for its finely painted, vivid decorations in indigo blue, red, yellow, and gold. Arita’s techniques and traditions have been carried on over over 400 years.

With a lovely bird on a wire pattern, these porcelain footed cups are just a great addition to your coffee/tea ritual and could make for a truly unique gift.
